Ancient Forms, Modern Minds: Contemporary Cherokee Ceramics
MAY 29 – NOVEMBER 10, 2017
The pottery of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians originated in Western North Carolina nearly 3,000 years ago. Pottery techniques have changed and altered over time, from initial constructions of large, thin-walled pots with stamped geometric designs, to blackware from the early 20th century. Using contemporary techniques, Cherokee potters often incorporate Cherokee syllabary and other popular Cherokee symbols and forms into their work. This exhibition features the work of 11 Cherokee artists, such as Joel Queen and Davey Arch, and brings together both historic and contemporary pottery techniques. Ancient Forms, Modern Minds was organized by the Asheville Art Museum and made possible through the generous support of the Cherokee Preservation Foundation. The WCU Fine Art Museum is the last venue to host this important touring exhibition.

RETURN FROM EXILE: Contemporary Southeastern Indian Art
Exhibition: August 21 - December 8, 2017 Reception: Thursday, November 10 5-7pm
WCU FINE ART MUSEUM HOURS: TUES-FRI 10AM-4PM / THURS 10AM-7PM
The exhibition features more than thirty contemporary Southeastern Native American artists working in a variety of media including painting, drawing, printmaking, basketry, sculpture, and pottery.
The WCU Fine Art Museum will be hosting the national traveling exhibition Return from Exile: Contemporary Southeastern Indian Art, curated by Tony A. Tiger, Bobby C. Martin, and Jace Weaver. Return from Exile is one of the first major exhibitions to focus on contemporary artists from tribal nations with an historical connection to the Southeastern United States. These include the so-called Five Civilized Tribes, the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee, and Muscogee (or Creek), and Seminole, all of whom were forcibly removed in the 1830s to present-day Oklahoma as a result of the Indian Removal Act of 1830. The title of the exhibition represents the return of these artists to their ancestral homelands.
As part of the exhibition, on November 10 the WCU Fine Art Museum at Bardo Arts Center will host a full day Contemporary Native American Art Symposium.
9:00am-4:00pm: Full Day Symposium | Free registration required 5:00pm-7:00pm: Reception honoring Return from Exile | Free and open to the public, registration not required. 7:30pm-9:00pm*: Keynote Performance from Canadian First Nation electronic music group, A Tribe Called Red *Ticketed event. Nov 7 The Legacy of Prohibition |
The legal framework in place for the production and distribution of alcoholic beverages in the U.S.A., which is a legacy of the prohibitionist movement of the last century, continues to have a significant impact on the development of the liquor industry. This talk will discuss the extend to which federal and state legislation has influenced the growth of the US craft liquor industry. In order to achieve this purpose, the state of North Carolina will be used as a case study, with particular reference to the city of Charlotte. The talk will explore how the growth of this important industry continues to be impacted by the legislative frameworks in place. Part of The Free Enterprise Speaker Series

Nov 8 - Nov 10 Mediation Training |
Mountain Mediation Services is offering its Community Mediation Training on November 8-10th. In this 21-hour training, participants learn the mediation process and are equipped with the tools needed to effectively deal with conflict and develop productive resolution. You will learn practical skills that will help you resolve conflicts you might have at work, in your neighborhood or with family members.
The course meets the certification standards of the Mediation Network of North Carolina. Upon completion of the three-day course, those who wish may work toward becoming a Certified Mediator, and may receive up to a full refund of their tuition fee in exchange for volunteering.
Volunteer mediators become members of a two-person mediation team and resolve conflicts between individuals referred by our court system. This is a very rewarding process that lasts from one to two hours. The commitment, both in time and frequency, is strictly up to the volunteer. Volunteers may also choose to become involved with the agency’s conflict resolution program at our area middle schools or with family or business mediations. Volunteers care about the process and the results and see that they truly make a difference in people’s lives.
