Hosted in partnership by the Office of Accessibility Resources and Dr. Rus Binkley, this event will provide an inside look on autism and all things related through panel interaction.

Hair, the beloved and controversial 1960's show that defined the rock-musical, tells the story of the Tribe, a group of politically active, long-haired hippies of the Age of Aquarius living a bohemian life in New York City. Claude, his good friend Berger, their roommate Sheila and all of their friends struggle to balance their young lives, loves, and the sexual revolution with their rebellion against the war and a society they stand at odds with. Claude must decide whether to resist the draft as his friends have done, or to succumb to social and familial pressures to serve in Vietnam, compromising his pacifistic principles and risking his life.

A panel of four employers will discuss the importance of superior customer service to the success, cultivation and preservation of businesses, aspects of superior customer service, and how to rebuild rapport with the public after bad experiences.

Lee plays several instruments, including the five-string banjo, various guitars, the Appalachian dulcimer, the mouth bow, the Cherokee flute and rattle, as well as the Native American drum.  He learned the music and stories of Southern Appalachian Mountains from the people who had them as part of their culture and community for generations.  Lee is a folk singer, story teller and outdoor leader, performing at concerts, Elderhostels, festivals, camps and schools.  Lee appears regularly at the Asheville Mountain Dance and Song Festival and the Lake Junaluska Folk Festival and has participated in artist-in-residence programs with SC Arts Commission, NC Arts Council, TN Performing Arts Foundation and GA Arts Council.

Asheville photographer and writer, Sue Wasserman will visit City Lights Bookstore to sign copies of her new book, A Moment’s Notice, on Saturday, April 8th at 3 p.m. Comprised of pieces about gratitude, patience, presence, and other meditations inspired by mountain nature, A Moment’s Notice is at once a field guide to the region and a meditation on what it means to exist in the world. Sue casts her well-trained eye on Southern Appalachian wildlife and translates what she sees and experiences in nature into thoughtful reflections. Included are the common names of the flora and fauna depicted.

A freelance writer, Sue’s work has appeared in The New York Times, Southern Living, American Style, as well as The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and The Asheville Citizen-Times.

On Tuesday, April 18, ACE hosts its final main stage show for the spring 2017 semester: Taikoza, Japanese Drummers. Taikoza uses the powerful rhythm of the Taiko drums to create an electrifying energy that carries audiences to a new dimension of excitement. The Taiko is a large, barrel-like drum that can fill the air with the sounds of rolling thunder. Roughly translated, Taiko means big drums- and that’s exactly what Taikoza brings: big drums, powerful rhythms, and electrifying, room-thumping energy. Drawing from Japan’s rich tradition of music and performance, Taikoza has created a new sound using a variety of traditional instruments. In addition to drums of assorted sizes, Taikoza incorporates the shakuhachi, the fue (both bamboo flutes) and the Koto (a 13 string instrument). Tickets are available now at the Bardo Box Office!

In the mountains, Decoration Day events, often called "decorations," occur anytime in the Spring.  We will show you how to make crepe paper flowers at the Mountain Heritage Center, then walk next door to decorate the cemetery at Culowhee Baptist Church.  A Decoration Day Exhibit can be viewed on the first floor hallway of the Hunter Library Building.

Campus Activities and Residential Living are proud to present Wale, with special guest Niykee Heaton, as the Student Appreciation Week concert. The concert will take place Thursday, April 20, at 8pm. Wale has released five studio albums including Shine (2017), The Album About Nothing (2015), The Gifted (2013), Ambition (2011), and Attention Deficit (2009). His most popular singles include “Bad,” “Lotus Flower Bomb,” and “That Way.” Niykee Heaton has had two headline tours. Her single “Bad Intentions” reached 28 on the US Pop Digital Chart in 2016.

Tickets are on sale now. Advance WCU Student tickets are $15 arena and $20 floor. Advance public tickets are $22.50 arena and $27.50 floor. There are limited floor seats available. Tickets can be purchased at ramsey.wcu.edu or at the Ramsey Box Office. All tickets increase by $5 day of show. All tickets have additional taxes and fees.

Dr. Enrique Gómez from the Chemistry and Physics department will talk about the total solar eclipse that will be viewed from Cullowhee on August 21st of 2017. This will be the first total solar eclipse across the Continental U.S. since 1979, and the WCU Culluhwee campus will be on the path of totality. Dr. Gómez I will explain the peculiarities of solar eclipses of the Earth-Moon system, geometric and atmospheric effects that can be expected during this event, and observing techniques for a memorable experience as well as safe viewing.
