Paige L. Christie will present the first book in her Legacies of Arnan series on Friday, May 19th at 6:30 p.m. at City Lights Bookstore. Janny Wurts said of Draigon Weather, the first book in the series, “A tightly focused first installment that delivers a delightful twist on the classic folk tale of appeasement by sacrifice.”

Paige L. Christie was raised in Maine and lives the NC mountains, writing speculative fiction, and walking her dog. Always a nerd, obsessive about hobbies like cross-country ski racing, Ghawazee Dance, and listening to the characters in her head, Paige can be found slightly left of center.

May 20    Terry Roberts to Present His New Novel

Terry Roberts will visit City Lights Bookstore on Saturday, May 20th at 3 p.m. to present his new novel. Set in the summer of 1866, a year after the Civil War has ended, That Bright Land is the story of Jacob Ballard, a former Union soldier and spy who has been sent south into the North Carolina mountains to find a serial killer who is carrying out his own private war in an isolated community. His journey also takes him home to the mountains where he was born. As he searches for the killer, he meets a war widow who helps him heal his own wounds and make peace with his past. Based on true events, That Bright Land paints a compelling picture of a violent and fragile nation in the wake of the Civil War.

Terry Roberts’ direct ancestors have lived in the mountains of Western North Carolina since the time of the Revolutionary War. His family farmed in the Big Pine section of Madison County for generations and is also prominent in the Madison County town of Hot Springs, the setting for both A Short Time to Stay Here and That Bright Land. His debut novel, A Short Time to Stay Here, won the Willie Morris Award for southern fiction. Born and raised near Weaverville, North Carolina, Roberts is the Director of the National Paideia Center and lives in Asheville, North Carolina.

May 23 - May 25    Community Mediation Training
Mountain Mediation Services is offering its Community Mediation Training on May 23rd- 25th.  In this 21-hour training, participants learn the mediation process and are equipped with the tools needed to effectively deal with conflict and develop productive resolution.  You will learn practical skills that will help you resolve conflicts you might have at work, in your neighborhood or with family members.

The course meets the certification standards of the Mediation Network of North Carolina.  Upon completion of the three-day course, those who wish may work toward becoming a Certified Mediator, and may receive up to a full refund of their tuition fee in exchange for volunteering.

Volunteer mediators become members of a two-person mediation team and resolve conflicts between individuals referred by our court system.  This is a very rewarding process that lasts from one to two hours.  The commitment, both in time and frequency, is strictly up to the volunteer.   Volunteers may also choose to become involved with the agency’s conflict resolution program at our area middle schools or with family or business mediations. Volunteers care about the process and the results and see that they truly make a difference in people’s lives.

Water Portraits: Barbara Tyroler
May 29 –August 25 2017
Reception Thursday June 15, 5-7pm

Barbara Tyroler is an artist, photographer, educator, and community worker based in Chapel Hill, NC. This exhibition features select works from her water portrait photography. Her water portraits of individuals, groups, and couples are semi-abstractions produced from within or outside of various swimming pools. In some photos, her subjects’ bodies are recognizable, in others, only an impressionistic surface is visible. Tyroler’s portraits are lyrical studies of form and design as well as the story of people and places visually transformed by the reflective properties of water.

This exhibition coincides with the Barbara Tyroler’s workshop, “Considering Abstraction with the Camera” offered through Cullowhee Mountain Arts. The workshop will take place at Western Carolina University from June 11 – 16, 2017.

In the late 1970s, Harvey K. Littleton, founder of the Studio Glass Movement, relocated to Spruce Pine, NC. Here, Littleton continued his experiments in vitreography, a printmaking technique that eventually became the creative focus of his workshop, Littleton Studios. Print Plus One: Beyond the Glass Matrix, features the work of seventeen artists who produced vitreographs at Littleton Studios. Many of these artists did not typically work in the print medium but were painters, sculptors, ceramists, or glass artists. The exhibition pairs vitreographs with objects made in these artists’ primary medium from the collections of the WCU Fine Art Museum and Asheville Art Museum.

Ancient Forms, Modern Minds: Contemporary Cherokee Ceramics

MAY 29 – NOVEMBER 10, 2017

The pottery of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians originated in Western North Carolina nearly 3,000 years ago. Pottery techniques have changed and altered over time, from initial constructions of large, thin-walled pots with stamped geometric designs, to blackware from the early 20th century. Using contemporary techniques, Cherokee potters often incorporate Cherokee syllabary and other popular Cherokee symbols and forms into their work. This exhibition features the work of 11 Cherokee artists, such as Joel Queen and Davey Arch, and brings together both historic and contemporary pottery techniques. Ancient Forms, Modern Minds was organized by the Asheville Art Museum and made possible through the generous support of the Cherokee Preservation Foundation. The WCU Fine Art Museum is the last venue to host this important touring exhibition.
