Jul 1 - Nov 10    Ancient Forms, Modern Minds

Ancient Forms, Modern Minds: Contemporary Cherokee Ceramics

MAY 29 – NOVEMBER 10, 2017

The pottery of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians originated in Western North Carolina nearly 3,000 years ago. Pottery techniques have changed and altered over time, from initial constructions of large, thin-walled pots with stamped geometric designs, to blackware from the early 20th century. Using contemporary techniques, Cherokee potters often incorporate Cherokee syllabary and other popular Cherokee symbols and forms into their work. This exhibition features the work of 11 Cherokee artists, such as Joel Queen and Davey Arch, and brings together both historic and contemporary pottery techniques. Ancient Forms, Modern Minds was organized by the Asheville Art Museum and made possible through the generous support of the Cherokee Preservation Foundation. The WCU Fine Art Museum is the last venue to host this important touring exhibition.

Jul 3 - Aug 25    Water Portraits: Barbara Tyroler

Water Portraits: Barbara Tyroler
May 29 –August 25 2017
Reception Thursday June 15, 5-7pm

Barbara Tyroler is an artist, photographer, educator, and community worker based in Chapel Hill, NC. This exhibition features select works from her water portrait photography. Her water portraits of individuals, groups, and couples are semi-abstractions produced from within or outside of various swimming pools. In some photos, her subjects’ bodies are recognizable, in others, only an impressionistic surface is visible. Tyroler’s portraits are lyrical studies of form and design as well as the story of people and places visually transformed by the reflective properties of water.

This exhibition coincides with the Barbara Tyroler’s workshop, “Considering Abstraction with the Camera” offered through Cullowhee Mountain Arts. The workshop will take place at Western Carolina University from June 11 – 16, 2017.

Print Plus One: Beyond the Glass Matrix

MAY 29– JULY 28, 2017
Reception Thursday July 27, 5-7pm

In the late 1970s, Harvey K. Littleton, founder of the Studio Glass Movement, relocated to Spruce Pine, NC. Here, Littleton continued his experiments in vitreography, a printmaking technique that eventually became the creative focus of his workshop, Littleton Studios. Print Plus One: Beyond the Glass Matrix, features the work of seventeen artists who produced vitreographs at Littleton Studios. Many of these artists did not typically work in the print medium but were painters, sculptors, ceramists, or glass artists. The exhibition pairs vitreographs with objects made in these artists’ primary medium from the collections of the WCU Fine Art Museum and Asheville Art Museum.

Jul 7    Concerts on the Creek 2017 - Darren Nicholson Band
The Darren Nicholson Band will bring its unique blend of Americana music to the Concerts on the Creek stage on Friday, July 7 from 7-9 p.m.

Nicholson is a Jackson County native and founding member of the nationally-known, award-winning WNC bluegrass group Balsam Range. He is a Grammy award nominee (2006) and a recipient of seven International Bluegrass Music Association awards with Balsam Range including Vocal Group of the Year (2015), Song of the Year (2015), Entertainer of the Year (2014), Vocal Group of the Year (2014), Album of the Year (2013), Song of the Year (2011), and Album of the Year (2006, with the Alecia Nugent Band). He has appeared countless times on WSM's Grand Ole Opry, at the Ryman Auditorium, and many of the world's most famous venues and networks. Currently, he records and tours as a full-time, founding member of Balsam Range and with all sorts of collaborative efforts each year. He's proud to have taken his blend of Country, Bluegrass, Americana to 49 states, as well as across Canada, Mexico, Bahamas, Jamaica, Haiti, Australia, and all over Europe.

Though Nicholson (mandolin/guitar/vocals) is still a full-time member of Balsam Range, he joins Kevin Sluder (bass/vocals) and Griff Martin (guitar/vocals) to form the Darren Nicholson Band during his free time off the road with Balsam Range. For this show, the band will be joined by very special guest Tony Creasman on drums. Creasman has performed on recordings for such artists as Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, James Taylor, Glen Campbell, Tony Rice, Linda Ronstadt, Waylon Jennings, Emmylou Harris, Sam Bush and Alison Krauss, just to name a few.

If you like fun, high-energy music with a groove, soaring trio singing, world-class pickin', and great songs…this is the band for you!

Nicholson released his second solo CD "Things Left Undone," in 2014, which was well-received nationally and had several songs from the recording climb the bluegrass charts.

Concerts on the Creek are held every Friday from Memorial Day through Labor Day from 7-9 p.m., at the Bridge Park gazebo stage in Sylva.

The Town of Sylva, Jackson County Parks and Recreation and Jackson County Chamber of Commerce team up to produce the Concerts on the Creek series.

Jul 8    An Appalachian Evening - Balsam Range
Bluegrass says a lot of what this band is about, but equally important are the aspects of Gospel and Country Music. All the fellows in the band grew up in the rich musical heritage of the Appalachian South, surrounded by culture and heritage steeped in traditions of The Grand Ole Opry…as well as the important influences of the Scotch-Irish settlers of the Southern Mountains, English ballads, Western songs…and tunes written by the band members themselves.

Before each 'An Appalachian Evening' concert, you can purchase a home-cooked Appalachian Dinner in the Schoolhouse Cafe from 6 to 7:30. Jul 14    Donna Glee Williams to Present Her Second Novel
Donna Glee Williams will present her second novel, Dreamers, on Friday, July 14th at 6:30 p.m. at City Lights Bookstore. Driven by duty towards a dreamless death… By the time she's sixteen, the town's Dreamer has long ago given up her own life. She only dreams for others now, every morning delivering up to them the divine guidance that comes to her in the night. In exchange, they treat the Dreamer like their queen. All her bodily needs are provided, but love and relationships are forbidden to her. Now something unexpected is happening. Something entirely new. A foreign man has come to the village, wearing a scarlet vest and a gold finger-ring that is far, far too good for a mere Water-Bearer. His strange amber eyes have found the Dreamer’s and she longs to be free. But maybe freedom isn't the only cost of being the Dreamer: When her dreams begin to question the authority of the self-serving Chief Interpreter, will she survive his fury? Jul 15    Urban Fantasy Appreciation Reading with Lauren Devora & Randi Janelle

Join local urban fantasy authors at City Lights Bookstore for a reading and general lovefest for the fantastical--in our stories and in our lives on Saturday, July 15th at 3 p.m. They'll invite you to partake in a quiz "Are you Living an Urban Fantasy Novel?" Randi and Lauren find their lives are similar to one--you may be surprised by how much of your life is urban fantasy as well!

Lauren Devora has been writing ever since she knew how to use a pencil. Children of Lilith was first imagined during a particularly rough session of math homework when Lauren was 15. That night the story gained 25 pages and a cast of characters. Her math homework was never finished. Now after 10 years, she is beyond giddy to witness her book go off into the world.

Randi Janelle is an author, photographer, performance poet, yoga instructor, cat Whisperer... She calls Asheville home, but has lived and toured in Australia and New Zealand, and understands the phrases "fair dinkum" and "keen as." She's writing a novel series; the first is The Story: Deviation (available to revel in!), and the second book, The Story: Possession is making its way into this world. She's joined the circus, well, the Literary Circus--a troupe of fellow authors to showcase and encourage literary acts of wonder. And to top it off, she's sharing channeled material for personal and global evolution, assisting in a new era called the Age of Omniscience with her business Create the Leap.

To reserve copies of their books please call City Lights Bookstore at 828-586-9499.

Jul 15    An Appalachian Evening - Helen White and Wayne Henderson
Wayne and Helen have been playing as a duo and as part of string bands together for about twenty years.
Hailing from the “mecca” of traditional mountain music, Wayne and Helen provide a visit to an Appalachian porch. The songs, fiddle tunes, amazing guitar playing and Wayne's stories and tales allow an audience to experience a nice sample of Appalachian culture.

Jul 27    Reception: Print Plus One

RECEPTION: Print Plus One: Beyond the Glass Matrix

This is a closing reception on Thursday July 27, 5-7pm
Exhibit runs : MAY 29– JULY 28, 2017

Jul 28    Art of Awakening Shamanic Consciousness
Linda Star Wolf will visit City Lights Bookstore on Friday, July 28th at 6:30 p.m. She will present her new book, Soul Whispering: The Art of Awakening Shamanic Consciousness.  Master Shamanic Breathwork Practitioner, Nita Gage co-wrote the book with Linda Star Wolf. The authors explore how the art of Soul Whispering can help each of us understand why we experience our lives the way we do and shift from healing our wounds to embracing the process of transformation. This is a powerful new synthesis of shamanic healing and psychotherapy. Sharing the ageless wisdom of their collective shamanic experiences and personal journey work, the authors show how soul whispering allows you to break free from your patterns of dysfunction, rekindle a profound soul connection, and shift your story from one of wounding and suffering to one of initiation and vibrancy.
