Ancient Forms, Modern Minds: Contemporary Cherokee Ceramics

MAY 29 – NOVEMBER 10, 2017

The pottery of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians originated in Western North Carolina nearly 3,000 years ago. Pottery techniques have changed and altered over time, from initial constructions of large, thin-walled pots with stamped geometric designs, to blackware from the early 20th century. Using contemporary techniques, Cherokee potters often incorporate Cherokee syllabary and other popular Cherokee symbols and forms into their work. This exhibition features the work of 11 Cherokee artists, such as Joel Queen and Davey Arch, and brings together both historic and contemporary pottery techniques. Ancient Forms, Modern Minds was organized by the Asheville Art Museum and made possible through the generous support of the Cherokee Preservation Foundation. The WCU Fine Art Museum is the last venue to host this important touring exhibition.

Reception: Thursday, November 10

WCU FINE ART MUSEUM HOURS:

The exhibition features more than thirty contemporary Southeastern Native American artists working in a variety of media including painting, drawing, printmaking, basketry, sculpture, and pottery.

The WCU Fine Art Museum will be hosting the national traveling exhibition Return from Exile: Contemporary Southeastern Indian Art, curated by Tony A. Tiger, Bobby C. Martin, and Jace Weaver. Return from Exile is one of the first major exhibitions to focus on contemporary artists from tribal nations with an historical connection to the Southeastern United States. These include the so-called Five Civilized Tribes, the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee, and Muscogee (or Creek), and Seminole, all of whom were forcibly removed in the 1830s to present-day Oklahoma as a result of the Indian Removal Act of 1830. The title of the exhibition represents the return of these artists to their ancestral homelands.

As part of the exhibition, on November 10 the WCU Fine Art Museum at Bardo Arts Center will host a full day Contemporary Native American Art Symposium.

9:00am-4:00pm: Full Day Symposium | Free registration required

Sep 9    Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST) in a Day

Mountains-to-Sea Trail (MST) in a Day commemorates a speech on September 9, 1977 by Howard Lee, then the NC Secretary of Natural Resources and Community Development. He told a National Trails Symposium in Waynesville that North Carolina should create a “state trail from the mountains to the coast, leading through communities as well as natural areas."

That speech was the catalyst for the trail that now stretches through 36 counties from the Great Smoky Mountains to the Outer Banks, and we’re celebrating its 40th anniversary all across the state.

Don’t miss this special opportunity to collaborate with hundreds of others across North Carolina to hike and paddle the entire 1,175 miles of the MST in one day.

Meditation is a personal experience that helps you relax, which reduces stress, and encourages other health benefits, no matter your faith tradition. During this session, we will help you understand what meditation is, what it isn’t, and how you can use it to create peace in your life.

No, you won’t have to sit like a pretzel, but we will teach you how to incorporate quiet contemplation into your daily routine. We will finish the presentation with a guided meditation to give you an idea of what a calming, rewarding experience it can be!

The Meditation Center is offering this seminar as a service to our community. The content of this class can also be offered as a private class at our center for individuals or groups. Please contact us at 828 356-1105 or info@meditate-wnc.org for more information.
