Jun 15 - Aug 24    Joshua Adams: Facing Culture

Joshua Adams: Facing Culture
Exhibition: June 15 - August 24
Reception: Thursday, August 23 from 5-7PM

The exhibition brings together a selection of masks and carvings of the human face by Eastern Band Cherokee artist Joshua Adams, who expresses a deep reverence for his culture through his artwork. A teacher of woodcarving at Cherokee High School, Adams' work reflects on the importance of preserving his culture and how outside influences have, and still do, impact Cherokee life and belief. Intended for display rather than ceremony, these representations of the human face range from traditional Cherokee forms to contemporary twists on tradition. Made from a variety of woods with details fashioned from rabbit fur, feathers, porcupine quills, and traditional arrows, Adams' works demonstrate the technical complexity of mask making and the array of materials that enliven this artform. Sculptors, wood carvers, historians, craft enthusiasts, and those interested in Cherokee art and culture will not want to miss this exhibition.

The Artist

Joshua Adams studied wood carving under renowned artist Dr. James Bud Smith. He is influenced by the legendary sculptor and teacher Amanda Crowe, who taught wood carving for nearly 40 years at Cherokee High School. He also learned aspects of his craft from his family, which includes woodcarvers James and Irma Bradley. In 2010, Adams took over teaching the woodcarving program at Cherokee High School and now instructs a younger generation of students in this revered Cherokee art form. Inspired by traditional masks, which are one of the earliest forms of carving practiced by the Cherokee people, Adams aims to celebrate and preserve his heritage. He combines this pride in his culture with an aesthetic inspired by graphic novels and graffiti art that brings his work a 21st-century edge.

Jun 15 - Aug 24    Mary Althea Parker: Abstract Impulse

Mary Althea Parker: Abstract Impulse
Exhibition: June 15 - August 24, 2018

This exhibition is a small selection of Mary Althea Parker’s works held by the WCU Fine Art Museum, focusing primarily on Parker’s paintings made after 1950.
Mary Althea Parker was a passionate painter and educator who dedicated her career to exploring abstraction. In 1948, Parker saw an exhibition of Hans Hofmann's work at the Addison Gallery of American Art that had a significant impact on her paintings. Hofmann's "brand" of abstraction, with its vibrant color and dynamic energy, resonated with Parker, and motivated her to take classes with Hofmann in Provincetown, Massachusetts.

While many of her titles continued to reference the real world, her approach to painting shifted to being non-representational and followed Hofmann's credo that "There are bigger things to be seen in nature than the object." This exhibition is a small selection of Parker's works held by the WCU Fine Art Museum, focusing primarily on Parker's paintings made after 1950.

Jun 22 - Aug 4    Art show opening June 22nd Gallery 1 Sylva - the Art of Beth and Ken Bowser

After an unavoidable delay, the much anticipated opening of new work at Gallery 1 Sylva will be held on Friday, June 22nd, with a reception beginning at 5:00 p.m. Beth and Ken Bowser will present their unique work in the backstreet gallery room until August 4th.

Beth, a native of Atlanta, GA, has been working with glass since 1980. Her first glass ventures were in Stained Glass and have expanded to include kiln formed glass.

Beth says that inspiration for her art comes from many sources, including nature, her imagination, and what she sees in a piece of glass when she looks at its unique characteristics. Both glass art forms offer challenges, but, for Beth, kiln formed glass offers more creative challenges, because one is ever quite sure what will come out of the kiln. She says, “Some pieces come out of the kiln as expected, others are happy accidents, while others are accidents waiting to be redeemed. And, yes, pieces have found their way into the trash.”

Her stained glass creations include copyrighted designs and numerous commissions in stained glass and kiln formed glass. Her kiln formed works include, but are not limited to pendants, most of which are one-of-a-kind; bowls; plates; vases; and free-hand designs. Both forms of glass art can be found in private residences, business offices, churches, and other settings across the country.

Ken began painting some 60 years ago.  He started with oils, but came to know a great watercolor painter near where he lived at the time and found himself hooked on watercolor.  For a number of years painting was a hobby, occasionally attending a workshop or painting on Saturdays with a group of fellow watercolorists in northeastern Ohio.

Every other year trips to Colorado and New Mexico with mentor Lowell Ellsworth Smith were always a plus.  They ventured to Mexico twice where it was a treat to meet some of the western artists and listen to their adventures in the art world.

Upon retirement he moved to the Highlands-Cashiers plateau.  Where else could one find so much natural beauty right outside the door?  Painting became more of an avocation, rather than just a hobby.

Favorite subjects include landscapes, continuing to paint with oils and pastels gives him more tools to capture the beauty in which he lives. While weather dictates whether one paints outdoors or not, painting in the open air is the ideal.

Besides showing in Gallery 1, Beth and Ken’s work  is also available at The Bascom Gift Shop in Highlands, NC, Tsaristry Gallery near Franklin NC and Gallery 1 Sylva.

Aug 3    Powerful Communication Strategies for Professional Women
Many women have built successful careers, but too few women have reached the highest levels in corporations, government, education and non-profit organizations. In ways that men do not, women must navigate a variety of obstacles, including stereotypical views, cultural expectations, and their own self-doubt and lack of confidence.

How we communicate has a profound impact on our workplace relationships, and, consequently, our careers. Research has documented many gender differences in workplace communication. For example, women often downplay their accomplishments, use tentative language, and send low power nonverbal cues. Women also, more than men, fear speaking up and commanding the "talk stage." To succeed, every woman must identify and address her communication challenges, understand both feminine and masculine communication styles, and commit to building a powerful professional persona.

As a result of attending this knowledge-and skill-building workshop, participants will gain a greater understanding of key gender differences in communication, including:

  • Taking credit for accomplishments
  • Tentative language use
  • Apologizing
  • Interrupting
  • Nonverbal cues
  • Listening
  • Conflict management
  • Public Speaking

Participants will complete a self-assessment instrument, engage in a variety of role-playing exercises to develop key skills, and develop their confidence and presence in public speaking. Designed for women only, this workshop is appropriate for women at all stages in their careers and across all workplace types.

Aug 3    Concerts on the Creek 2018 - Lance & Lea
Lance and Lea will make their very first appearance at Concerts on the Creek in Sylva on Friday, Aug. 3 from 7-9 p.m.

Dream loud. That’s the way Texas native Lance Kotara and Colorado belle LeAnna Kaufman live their lives. It was no surprise the two songwriters would find each other in Nashville. Their undeniable creative chemistry exploded, forming the duo, Lance and Lea.

Lance describes their first songwriting session together as nothing short of amazing. On a typical day, you can find the duo in their home studio, writing and laying down a new track. Lea says their determination and commitment to the music is indestructible. Marked by heart pounding harmonies, prominent guitars, and emotional lyrics and melodies, their collaborative genius is on fire, with over 200 songs already penned. And they were right. It was worth it. In 2016 the duo signed with Nashville’s Number One Group, and their first album with producer Paul Worley was released in mid-2017. Their music is making the rounds internationally, garnering airplay in the UK, Ireland, and in Music City, Nashville Tennessee.

Lance knew he wanted to be a musician at a young age. Growing up in the small town of Beeville, Texas, he saw music as self-expression, and once he started, he couldn’t stop. The desire to play brought Lance to Austin, where he formed a band and played the live scene, sharing the stage with influencers like Snow Patrol, Jars of Clay, and even Vince Neil of Motley Crue. Lance found a love for songwriting and relocated to Nashville to hone those skills and make a name for himself. He was lucky enough to land a major label single with country artist Laura Bell Bundy, and have a song in the 2016 Share a Song/Share a Coke campaign.

Lea says her love for music grew from her days singing alongside her sisters in church. Songwriting opened up a new outlet for creative expression for Lea. “It wasn’t long before I found myself in Nashville working alongside producer/songwriter Wayne Wilkins, who’s worked with Natasha Bedingfield and Beyoncé, and since then, I’ve had the opportunity to record with some of Nashville’s finest musicians.”

The duo hasn’t forgotten their past but uses the present for inspiration. They agree that something special happens when they both pick up a guitar, something that puts them in the moment where songs come to life.

Concerts on the Creek are held every Friday from Memorial Day through Labor Day from 7-9 p.m., at the Bridge Park gazebo stage in Sylva. The Town of Sylva, Jackson County Parks and Recreation and Jackson County Chamber of Commerce team up to produce the Concerts on the Creek series.

Aug 10    Concerts on the Creek 2018 - The Get Right Band
The Get Right Band will make its inaugural performance at Concerts on the Creek in Sylva on Friday, Aug. 10 from 7-9 p.m.

This funk/rock/reggae band from Asheville, N.C., are one of Relix Magazine’s “On The Verge” picks, Home Grown Music Network’s 2015 “Best New Band of the Year,” and were voted “Best Progressive Band” in Western North Carolina by Mountain Xpress readers. They have performed on the famed World Cafe, a nationally syndicated NPR show, and have brought their unique sound to major festivals and venues such as FloydFest, The Orange Peel, Music City Roots TV Show, The Green Parrot, Arlene’s Grocery, and Riverbend Fest. Combining catchy, clever, honest songwriting with musical expertise and fearless improvisation, the live show promises to move your head, heart, and hips.

The band is built on the musical brotherhood that guitarist/vocalist Silas Durocher and bassist Jesse Gentry have formed playing music together since middle school. Durocher, who is a trained composer and has been commissioned to write for symphonies and chamber groups, possesses guitar chops that can soothe or rage and a charismatic swagger as a frontman and a singer. With the addition of Jian-Claude Mears, a drummer with “precision, passion, and an inescapable momentum” (Live For Live Music), the group’s sound has become an unstoppable force. They have been wowing audiences around the country and the Caribbean since their inception in 2011 with an unparalleled live show and a relentless tour schedule.

The Get Right Band released their third studio album in 2016, "Who’s in Charge?" The record was made at Asheville’s legendary Echo Mountain Studios (Widespread Panic, Zac Brown Band, Smashing Pumpkins), engineered, mixed, and co-produced by Julian Dreyer (The Avett Brothers, Dawes, Band of Horses), and mastered by six-time Grammy winner Brian Lucey (The Black Keys, Grace Potter, Dr. John, Beck). The album has received praise and support from such giants as The Huffington Post, NPR, Relix, WTF with Marc Maron, Live For Live Music, PopWrapped, and dozens of radio stations around the country.

While seamlessly blending a number of different genres, the CD is held together by The Get Right Band’s honest songwriting, fierce playing, and strong self-identity. The powerful songs and the pop/rock/psychedelic approach to production puts the album in the realm of acts like My Morning Jacket, Dr. Dog, and The Black Keys (with hints of Sublime and early Chili Peppers).

The Get Right Band has had the honor of playing shows with national acts such as Galactic, Rusted Root, Victor Wooten Band, Martin Barre (of Jethro Tull), Turkuaz, Mike Dillon Band, Jeff Sipe Trio, Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band, Jeff Coffin’s Mutet, Larry Keel, and Bobby Lee Rodgers.

ART IN MONTEITH PARK
hosted by APPALACHIAN WOMEN'S MUSEUM

On Saturday, August 18, 2018 we will celebrate the Appalachian Women's Museum with ART IN MONTEITH PARK, a day long arts & crafts festival in Dillsboro, N.C. There will be more than 40 booths of handmade, local arts and crafts. Entertainment will include “The Maggie Valley Band” playing a blend of old-time mountain, Americana and folk music and the J. Appalachian women. The museum has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Appalachian Women's Museum will be open to welcome visitors who want to get an idea what life was like back in the day.

Also there will be balloon entertainment, NGN 52 wood fired pizza, Jimmy's Italian Ices, and much more.

In addition, there are a series of easily-accessible, interpretive nature trails along the shoreline of adjacent Scotts Creek. Also, you will find a childrens playground. Plan to bring chairs and spend the day.

Aug 21 - Nov 9    Grids & Gradients: The Visual Systems of Vernon Pratt

Grids & Gradients: The Visual Systems of Vernon Pratt
Exhibition: August 21 through November 9, 2018

Drawn primarily from the collection of the WCU Fine Art Museum, this exhibition brings together a selection of recently-acquired paintings by Vernon Pratt, an artist who worked at the intersection of art and mathematics. Pratt took a systematic approach to his creative process, often exploring the rich array of possibilities within a given set of parameters.
The paintings on view focus on two of Pratt’s characteristic elements—the grid and the gradient. Math activities for both college-age and middle-school students will be developed in conjunction with the exhibition to help illuminate the connections between art and math that permeate Pratt’s work.

Vernon Pratt (1940-2000) lived and worked in Durham, NC and was passionate about the interrelationship of math, music, and art. He taught in the Art Department at Duke University for over 30 years, developing a particular form of abstraction, which he termed “systematic abstraction.” In the late 1960s, he adopted the motto that “simple is complicated enough,” and began limiting his palette to black, white, and gray. This led him to explore the visual potential of grayscale gradients in his paintings, and he developed a fascination with incremental form, using each canvas to create a series of visual transformations with colors, shapes, or words. His work is informed by the art of the Russian Constructivists, 1960s Minimalism, and Conceptual Art, including the work of Sol LeWitt, who was one of his close friends.

More Details
The exhibition runs through Friday, November 9. The WCU Fine Art Museum is free and open to the public Tuesday through Friday 10-4PM and Thursday 10-7PM. Free parking is available on site.

Aug 24    Concerts on the Creek 2018 - Geoff McBride
The next Concerts on the Creek will be on Friday, August 24 from 7-9 p.m. Sylva resident Geoff McBride will be the featured performer.

You heard him on “The Voice.” Now get ready to hear the true voice of Geoff McBride, a voice born of tradition.

The powerhouse singer blew away millions of viewers – and judges Christina Aguilera and Cee Lo Green– with his explosive twist on Stevie Wonder’s “Higher Ground” during the blind auditions phase of NBC’s mega-hit talent competition.

McBride, whose rough video demo of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Goin’ On” got him in the door and who sealed the deal singing “Drift Away” for the show’s executive producers, never viewed his time on the show as a competition – but rather an opportunity to share his gift. Having only returned to singing live professionally a few years ago after some years away from the industry, McBride’s rekindled passion inspired his decision to become a recording artist once again. A key part of this was the on-screen encouragement of Aguilera, who snagged McBride for her team after a mini-battle for him with Green.

Immediately after the singer wrapped “Higher Ground,” Aguilera enthused, “The very first note you hit blew me away!” She also emphasized her appreciation of his “amazing level of energy” that brought the audience to its feet. Lionel Richie was also dazzled by McBride’s incredible vocal abilities. “When Geoff walked in... BOOM!” Richie exclaimed excitedly. “His delivery was unbelievable. It was not coming out of a microphone. There was no speaker. I love it.” Judges Blake Shelton and Adam Levine echoed their colleagues' admiration for McBride after each of his appearances. "You can sing your ass off, man. You really... That was Stevie you're messing with there so that's a testament to your ability. Congratulations, man. You're awesome!" (Adam Levine)

With a rich vocal palette that taps as deeply into the church music traditions of his youth as it does the romantic power of legends like Seal, Luther Vandross, Marvin Gaye, Al Green and Donny Hathaway, the North Carolina born singer brings his uncanny storytelling ability – in the tradition of another of his heroes, James Taylor - to his music and his live performances.

McBride's career began when a demo he worked on found its way to the brass at numerous labels, and McBride soon had offers for recording deals from Motown, Atlantic and Arista. Signing with Clive Davis’ label in the late 1980's, he soon found himself mingling with a roster that included Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Gladys Knight, Teddy Pendergrass, Jermaine Jackson, Carly Simon and Lisa Stansfield. The album he recorded for Arista, "Do You Still Remember Love?" was produced by the late Gerald Levert and spawned the Billboard R&B chart hit “No Sweeter Love.”

Even prior to his days with Arista, McBride had national recognition such as performing for President Jimmy Carter at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville in the late 1970's before he had even graduated from high school.

During a handful of years outside the industry, he eventually found his way back to music and started doing commercial work while performing regularly at Café 290 in Atlanta – a venue that was frequented often by a lot of heavyweights of the music industry.

An opportunity for the McBrides led him to move his family to the Florida Panhandle in 2006. There, he performed for locals and tourists alike at popular elite restaurants, private events, venues and working with the Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center for a number of years, performing at various benefits, including three with Oscar winning actor Morgan Freeman. Now, he is available in Atlanta, Asheville and across the Southeast, as he has recently relocated with his family to the mountains of Western North Carolina.

“Looking back on those early career experimentations,” McBride says, “I was probably more interested in finding myself than the type of music I would eventually claim as my own. Although I didn’t understand it at the time, those years of personal and professional discovery were a necessary part of my growth as an artist that, only now, I find paying off in this season of my career.

My dad passed away when I was very young, and he was a gentle soul who used to sing to my mom in the kitchen. I learned from them about the power of music to heal and inspire as the universal language. I want to tell the world that there is still real music sung by real singers. We’re still around and still have the chops – so brace yourselves!”

Little more info about Ashley:

Dubbed as one of Rolling Stone’s “Artists You Need To Know," citing she's "an Arkansas red-clay badass, with the swagger of Hank Jr. and the songwriting of Miranda Lambert," McBryde fearlessly lays it all on the line, and it's that honest all-in approach that has led to NPR critic Ann Powers to ask if McBryde could be "among the first post-Stapleton country stars?" McBryde's album showcases an artistic vision that proves her to be one of the genre's keenest working storytellers, bringing unwavering honesty back into a pop-preoccupied genre. Pulling tales from every corner of her human experience, McBryde sings with fire and fury, laughing and swigging that brown stuff along the way.

Yerma-by Simon Stone after Federico García Lorca

The incredible Billie Piper (Penny Dreadful, Great Britain) returns in her Evening Standard Best Actress award-winning role.

A young woman is driven to the unthinkable by her desperate desire to have a child in Simon Stone’s radical production of Lorca’s achingly powerful masterpiece. The unmissable theatre phenomenon sold out at the Young Vic and critics call it ‘an extraordinary theatrical triumph’ (The Times) and ‘stunning, searing, unmissable’ (Mail on Sunday). Billie Piper’s lead performance is described as ‘spellbinding’ (The Evening Standard), ‘astonishing’ (iNews) and ‘devastatingly powerful’ (The Daily Telegraph).

Set in contemporary London, Piper’s portrayal of a woman in her thirties desperate to conceive builds with elemental force to a staggering, shocking, climax.

Please note this broadcast does not have an intermission.

Please note that this performance of Yerma includes strobe lighting
