 Reception Thursday June 14, 5 – 7pm

Celebrating the efforts of Harvey Littleton, one of the greatest proponents of using glass as an expressive medium, the exhibition explores the work of contemporary artists concentrating in glass and how they are building off the foundations laid by Littleton during the early years of the Studio Glass Movement. Artists featured in the exhibition include Alex Bernstein, Carol Milne, Hayden Wilson, Matt Eskuche, Shane Fero, Robert Burch, Dean Allison, Carmen Lozar, Carole Frève and others. Aug 21 - Nov 9    Grids & Gradients: The Visual Systems of Vernon Pratt

Grids & Gradients: The Visual Systems of Vernon Pratt
Exhibition: August 21 through November 9, 2018

Drawn primarily from the collection of the WCU Fine Art Museum, this exhibition brings together a selection of recently-acquired paintings by Vernon Pratt, an artist who worked at the intersection of art and mathematics. Pratt took a systematic approach to his creative process, often exploring the rich array of possibilities within a given set of parameters.
The paintings on view focus on two of Pratt’s characteristic elements—the grid and the gradient. Math activities for both college-age and middle-school students will be developed in conjunction with the exhibition to help illuminate the connections between art and math that permeate Pratt’s work.

Vernon Pratt (1940-2000) lived and worked in Durham, NC and was passionate about the interrelationship of math, music, and art. He taught in the Art Department at Duke University for over 30 years, developing a particular form of abstraction, which he termed “systematic abstraction.” In the late 1960s, he adopted the motto that “simple is complicated enough,” and began limiting his palette to black, white, and gray. This led him to explore the visual potential of grayscale gradients in his paintings, and he developed a fascination with incremental form, using each canvas to create a series of visual transformations with colors, shapes, or words. His work is informed by the art of the Russian Constructivists, 1960s Minimalism, and Conceptual Art, including the work of Sol LeWitt, who was one of his close friends.

The exhibition runs through Friday, November 9. The WCU Fine Art Museum is free and open to the public Tuesday through Friday 10-4PM and Thursday 10-7PM. Free parking is available on site.

As a visual artist working with recycled materials, Isabella explores combining the aesthetics of steampunk, dieselpunk, street art, and interpretations on retro-futurism. Oct 25    Free Enterprise Speaker Series: Voting. Loren Lomasky, "Your Vote and the Demise

Loren Lomasky, University of Virginia, "Your Vote and the Demise of Democracy"

Part of the Free Enterprise Speaker Series.

Free and Open to the Public

About this Discussion: With the 2018 midterm elections unfolding in the wake of a bitter Supreme Court nomination, it seems that more public attention than ever is focused on voting and democracy in America. In this timely public lecture, Professor Loren Lomasky of the University of Virginia will explore important but sometimes overlooked aspects of voting and democracy. As Winston Churchill famously quipped, “democracy is the worst form of government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time.” Lomasky, will explore the undersides of voting and troubling developments in societies around the globe, from Turkey to Poland, Hungary to the Philippines, and here at home too. Is democracy in decline? Does your vote matter anymore? This event will present these questions and more from this renowned professor and important voice.

About the Speaker: Loren Lomasky is Cory Professor of Political Philosophy, Politics, and Law and the University of Virginia. Professor Lomasky is best known for his work in moral and political philosophy. His book Persons, Rights, and the Moral Community (Oxford University Press, 1987) established his reputation as a leading advocate of a rights-based approach to moral and social issues. He is also co-author of Democracy and Decision: The Pure Theory of Electoral Preference (Cambridge University Press, 1993), a landmark work about the effects of voting in democracies. In his 2016 article, “Fleecing the Young,” Lomasky makes the case for more intergenerational fairness in U.S. budget policies that currently enrich older generations while handing young people the bill. For more than four decades, Lomasky has taught undergraduate and graduate classes in the philosophy of religion, medieval philosophy and other episodes in the history of philosophy as well as many topics in moral and political philosophy. He has held research appointments sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Center for the Study of Public Choice, the Australian National University, and the Social Philosophy and Policy Center. He has been the recipient of many awards including the American Philosophical Association’s Matchette Prize for the best book in philosophy.

About the Free Enterprise Speaker Series: Now in its twelfth year, WCU’s Free Enterprise Speaker Series is held three times a semester to offer a forum for the campus and community to explore all points of view on important issues of the day, hear from renowned experts from a variety of fields, and understand multiple perspectives through civil, informed, and fruitful discourse. Sponsored by Center for the Study of Free Enterprise.

Oct 25    Hassan Davis Presents - York

York: Explorer is a story of brotherhood, friendship and, ultimately, disappointment. As a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, York discovered his spirit of freedom, what it was like to walk with head held high, to have a voice and to be an important member of a team. When York returned to "civilization" that new spirit nearly killed him. William Clark, a man that York would have freely given his own life for, could not imagine York as anything except property, a slave. watch video

Trae Crowder (The Liberal Redneck), Drew Morgan and Corey Ryan Forrester are stand-up comedy and writing partners. The trio has been touring nationally to sold out clubs and theatres in support of their best-selling book, Liberal Redneck Manifesto: Draggin Dixie Outta the Dark.

This year’s tour, wellRED: From Dixie With Love, is about celebrating everything great about the South and telling stories from a place of love. It’s about dancing to country music at a gay wedding. It’s about loving your neighbor whether you have the same religion, skin color, or sexual preference, as long as they cheer for the same college football team (Go Vols! …or Go Dawgs if you’re Corey).  It is about leaving behind bigotry, but remembering the fried okra.

Oct 31    Artist in Residence: Clare Twomey

Clare Twomey is a leading figure in clay practice; her work engages with clay yet often at a critical distance. Twomey's work negotiates the realms of performance, serial production, and transience, and often involves site-specific installations. She is especially concerned with the affective relations that bind people and things, and how objects can enable a dialogue with the viewer. Twomey is a Tate Exchange lead artist at the Tate Modern 2018, challenging the theme of production.
